The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) will be expanding its helpline to seven evenings a week from Nov 1st, 2012. An unprecedented increase in public donations and fundraising this year has enabled us to extend our CALM helpline service from four evenings a week to seven.

The numbers of suicides on Merseyside among young men has fallen by a massive 55% over the past 10 years, bringing it below the average for young men in the North West and the rest of England & Wales, according to newly published figures by the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

We’re sure Fern was simply trying to highlight the terrible scourge that depression can be when she talked about the issue. However, by labeling suicide as a ‘brave’ action she has simply re-enforced the pressure upon men – who commit 76% of all suicides in the UK– to continue to bottle it up.
